The Department of Agricultural Development is co-located with the Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources in four buildings with a total area of 7,510 square meters. The facilities are integrated into the urban fabric of the city of Orestiada, approximately 500 meters from the city’s central square. The initial establishment of the departments took place in a newly constructed building, which was provided by the Municipality of Orestiada.

The needs of student welfare (catering, accommodation) are met by modern student dormitories with fully equipped single rooms and a student restaurant for student dining. Courses are conducted in amphitheaters, classrooms, and laboratories, appropriately equipped for the implementation of laboratory exercises and experiments. Additionally, the Department has a Farm, which is utilized for educational and research purposes, providing opportunities for practical and laboratory training for students, as well as conducting experiments and research collaborations.

Currently, the facilities of Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) in Orestiada include:

  • The main building, which houses the department secretariats, the library, the technical services, and offices for faculty members and other staff. The building also includes a conference room, a ceremony hall with a capacity of 150 people, five classrooms, four laboratory rooms, and auxiliary spaces.
  • The Amphitheater Complex, covering an area of 791 sq.m. It was delivered in the year 2000 and consists of two amphitheaters with a total capacity of 280 people, along with auxiliary spaces.
  • The Research Laboratories Building. Constructed in 2002, it covers an area of 1,781 sq.m. and accommodates laboratories, offices, and auxiliary spaces.
  • A modern greenhouse, delivered in 2007, with an area of 120 sq.m., serving educational and research needs.
  • The cafeteria building. Constructed in 2004, it has an area of 71 sq.m.
  • The student dormitory complex. Located at the intersection of Mourouzi and Evripidis streets within the urban fabric of Orestiada. Delivered in 2009, it consists of the residential building (2,040 sq.m.) and the kitchen and dining facilities building (433 sq.m.). It is also supported by an underground mechanical installation area of 953 sq.m. The dormitory has a capacity of 70 single rooms, 2 double rooms, and one room for individuals with special needs. Additionally, it includes seven single and one double room for staff. All rooms are fully equipped (furniture, private bathroom, TV, telephone, internet) and meet modern standards.
  • The Agricultural Farm. The educational and research needs of the Department of Agricultural Development are served by an outdoor area of approximately 34,000 sq.m., which was granted by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food in 2017. The farm is located near the city’s core, next to the railway station (formerly the property of the Agricultural Research Station of ETHIAGE).
  • Land for the construction of a University Campus. The Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) has acquired approximately 350 acres of land in Orestiada, where a university campus will be built in the future.
  • The DIMITRA Building. The former “ELGO – DIMITRA” building was granted to DUTH in February 2016 to support the educational and research needs of the School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences. Specifically, the building complex is situated on a plot of 9,809 sq.m. and is located at the southeastern edge of the city, approximately 1,000 meters from the city center. The main entrance is at 15 Evripidis Street. The building consists of a single structure with three wings, forming an “Π” shape in its floor plan. The total built area is 791.66 sq.m. Specifically, apart from the common areas (security post, restrooms, general storage, waiting areas), the building includes:
    • Two classrooms, one for each department
    • Two office spaces, one for each department
    • Four rooms and one smaller space serving four laboratories of the Department of Agricultural Development
    • Four rooms serving five laboratories of the Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources.
